The Camden Anchor-Rockland Machine Company began making one-cylinder engines in 1901. Over the next 20 years, these engines helped transform the local lobster industry from sail power to motors. The Knox motors were eventually available in 1, 2, 4, and 6 cylinder versions and ranged in power from 1 1/2 hp to 75 hp. As there were more engine options, more industries and boaters used the Knox including other fishing industries, cargo haulers, and pleasure boaters.
