Traveling show people were among the first to use wagons for homes in the early 1800s. As they traveled from town to town, venue to venue, these large wagons were pulled by teams of horses. The Romani, an ethnic group that historical lived a nomadic life in Europe and Asia began living in wagons instead of tents in the 1850s. Overtime, these wagons evolved from simple platforms with tents on them to elaborate custom-built mobile homes.

The British wagon maker Dunton’s of Reading became very well known for making a variety of models of Romani wagon between 1884 and 1920. This one is the ‘Reading’ model that very popular because it was very good when traveling over poor roads.
